Spoiler update - General There was a plan for a spin off show with a focus on Luke and Lorelai with baby. But Lauren made it clear she and Alexis would not do a show without the other. It is about 50/50 for the show to return at this time. Luke and Lorelai The are planning an Everwood type ending, as I said before if we don’t get season 8 then they will be together more. If season 8 happens then they will be together but not to the same extent. (IMO this is to play it out longer in the next season.) Whatever happens the news will be good for Luke and Lorelai. big sign outside the CS on the soundstage that said "Congratulations on 150 episodes" or something like that. It was the last day of shooting for 7.19. They must have had a cake to celebrate, as there were some small paper plates with bits of cake left on them in the DFI dining room still. At least they had some kind of little celebration for that milestone." -

NEW - Studio Tour - The new car (Blue Chrysler Aspen) is for Lorelai, and is bought for the Dragonfly Inn and has decals on it now. Setting up the diner and more lights on the gazebo, working on the Twickham house, also shooting something in the DFI with Lauren and Alexis. No more logans aparent he is "done and gone" and doing some Yale scenes. - - the "No Cell Phones" sign is still there.

Studio Tour - Location shoot in Griffith park was just Lorelai, and her Jeep breaks down. -

Lauren shot a scene alone in Griffith Park, also a scene at Sookies. No more Logan NY apartment. Alexis is the only one left to sign so they are waiting on writing a conclusion or cliffhanger for season 8. -

tv.comDuring the annual Spring Fling at Stars Hallow, there are a lot of guests staying at the Dragonfly Inn. Michel is very irritated with the guest's cheerfulness, Rory is coming back on a train from Providence, and April is going to give Luke a bracelet. Sometime later, Lorelai, Rory, Logan, and Michel, along with some of the tourists, are going to go to the Spring Fling on a bus rented by the Dragonfly Inn. At the Spring Fling, some of the guests at the Inn are a bit uncertain about a maze that is made out of hay. Especially one of the kids, because no one will chase him or shoot him with water guns as he goes through the maze. Finally, Logan decides to go through the maze with the kid.

And the troubadour was there - got to hear him play, but not close enough to make out the song. Ausiello: Fair enough. The buzz in Stars Hollow is that the key to an eighth season may rest in Alexis Bledel's petite hands. Unlike Lauren Graham, who appears to be somewhat amenable to the idea of continuing on for another year, Bledel is proving a tougher sell. As a result, Warner Bros. and the CW are allegedly developing a Plan B that would focus an eighth season on Lorelai, Luke and their new baby, with the occasional sweeps-month guest appearance by Rory. Wow, that sounds like a disaster.

Question: Do you know how Gilmore Girls plans to deal with Melissa McCarthy's pregnancy?— Katherine

Ausiello: Turns out it was just a minor "tweaking." The story plays out the same way, with Luke running errands for Emily and Chris throwing a pity party for himself. But it's my understanding that Lorelai's epiphany will be more gradual. The end result, of course, will be the same: Luke in, Christopher out. Speaking of Episode 13, in a Gilmore first, nearly the entire hour will take place in the hospital. I hear there's some great Lorelai/Emily stuff. It's about damn time.

Ausiello: It's slim pickings, my dear. All I have for you is... wait, what's this? An exclusive interview with show-runner David Rosenthal, in which he discusses the fallout from last night's controversial Lorelai-Christopher nuptials, among other things? How could I possibly have forgotten?
I'm assuming it's not going to be smooth sailing for the newlyweds, right?
David Rosenthal: It's one thing to go off on this romantic weekend and get married; it's another thing to actually come back and deal with the reality of being married. Lorelai's never lived with anyone. They've never really lived together. This marriage puts a lot of pressure on them both. That's the big theme for the latter half of the season for Lorelai and Chris, and for Rory. She's facing graduation and her future, and she's always thought, "Oh, I'm going to be a journalist." Rory's going to open herself up to the possibility that there are other options out there for her.
Rory's going to embark on a new career?
Rosenthal: She's never really considered anything else; now she's willing to consider everything else. And there's the other issue of Logan being back in New York. There are opportunities that could pull her away from Logan. Suddenly, it's no longer a college relationship. It's two people out in the world, so the stakes become higher.
How will Logan's return impact Rory in the short term?
Rosenthal: It will kind of rev up their relationship in good and bad ways. We're going to see their relationship deepen and complicate in many ways.
Will Rory find herself torn between Marty and Logan?
Rosenthal: No. Marty's feelings for Rory will really be the issue; it's not reciprocated. The man is still holding a torch. It's something he just can't seem to let go of, and it'll definitely cause problems. But there's nothing on Rory's end. It's not her thing — it's his thing.

Sorry, but you Gilmore Girshippers have proven way too sharp for your own good, and I promised certain VIPs that I wouldn't spill the proverbial beans this early in the game. But here's something that should more than make up for me being a big ol' tease. I recently unearthed from the archives this exclusive interview with Gilmore show-runner David Rosenthal that I conducted in August for TV Guide's Returning Favorites issue (on newsstands now). It's chock full of spoilery goodness ? some of which I've already doled out in Ask Ausiello ? so proceed at your own peril. And please, don't shoot the messenger, no matter how strong the urge. Remember: The messenger is good. (And last I checked, kinda sexy.)

Ausiello: Now that you've completed your first episode as show-runner, what was it like?David Rosenthal: It was great. Everybody's in great spirits and very excited, and it was a really good first week. It's a group that's been together a long time, so they really know their stuff.

Ausiello: When will the show take its traditional summertime leap forward in time?
Rosenthal: The first three episodes of the season are kind of the summer. You know, Rory's home from school. And then Episode 4, Rory will be heading back to school. So the big jump will be between episodes 3 and 4. There will be a few weeks between 2 and 3, but 1 and 2 are pretty continuous. We view them as a two-hour Gilmore Girls movie. It's just a lot of emotional stuff that we're facing.

Ausiello: I got the sense that Luke was headed somewhere at the end of the premiere. Rosenthal: Luke will definitely be heading somewhere when we come up in Episode 2, but I don't wanna ruin it. I think people will be very curious and interested to see where he's going.

Ausiello: Will those first three episodes primarily focus on the fallout from Lorelai's night with Christopher?
Rosenthal: Yeah. I mean, there are so many ramifications, not only for Lorelai and for Luke, but you know, for Rory and for Christopher. Something like this sends shockwaves out, so there's a lot to deal with. There's still obviously a lot of other [fun] stuff going on, but in terms of emotionally, yeah, there's a lot of fallout. I also feel like the first five or six episodes are really kind of setting Luke and Lorelai on a course for the season. And it's gonna take a few episodes for us to get them out at sea and on their journeys for the year. But I'm hoping the audience will be with us and interested and ready to follow them where they're going.

Ausiello: Is it safe to say Luke and Lorelai are taking separate journeys?
Rosenthal: They definitely are on separate journeys, but their journeys will also intersect and overlap. It won't be like Luke's over here and Lorelai's over there and never the two shall meet... not at all. They're on their own journeys, but those journeys will come together.

Ausiello: There's a line in the first episode where Lorelai tells Luke it's over. How much should L/L fans read into that?
Rosenthal: Time has a way of healing. She means it, but is that the case forever? I don't believe that. Do I think Luke and Lorelai ultimately are soul mates? I do. I really do. But does that mean they're gonna run off together tomorrow and live happily ever after? No. But I think it seems like they're at a point where they both have some regrowing and changing to do and some things to figure out. It's over for now.

Ausiello: How pivotal is Christopher in Lorelai's journey this season?
Rosenthal: Very. He's a big part of her life and he's a big part of Rory's life. This past season he really showed a different side, a more patient side, a more mature side. And I feel like he's earned their trust in a way he really hasn't before, and he's in their lives in a way he really hasn't been before.

Ausiello: Will they be back together romantically?
Rosenthal: Certainly, given what's happened... yeah. Absolutely.

Ausiello: And I assume Anna and April will be a big part of Luke's journey.
Rosenthal: Absolutely. Those relationships will continue to intensify.

Ausiello: What's up with Richard and Emily?
Rosenthal: Obviously, the Luke and Lorelai relationship will impact them. They've always been very conflicted about Luke and his role in Lorelai's life. Also, Richard is going to be offered a guest lecturership at Yale, so he'll be on campus and around Rory. Emily, as part of her DAR work, is doing a little cotillion training for young girls. She's running her own little etiquette school, which will be very funny. I think it'll really be a great thing for her. There also might be some health issues coming up this year.

Ausiello: For Richard?
Rosenthal: Yeah. So that's something that could impact them significantly in terms of his work and also kind of Emily's role in his life and their dynamic. I think health issues can create stress and conflict and trauma in a family, but they can also bring the family together. It can bring mothers and daughters close together and it can bring grandparents and grandchildren close together.

Ausiello: I hear the stork will pay a visit to Stars Hollow this season.
Rosenthal: There will be multiple babies born this season. There also will be a marriage.

Ausiello: Please tell me Lorelai won't be faced with a "who's the daddy?" quandary.
Rosenthal: No, no, no. I promise. There are no sharks anywhere near our set and there will be no jumping of them.

Ausiello: OK, that's fantastic news. Why did you decide to keep Logan in London? I thought for sure he would find some way to wiggle himself out of that situation.
Rosenthal: I think it presents an interesting issue for Rory, and it's a complicated thing when you're still in college and your boyfriend or girlfriend has graduated and moved on. And not only moved on ? he's in the professional world and she's still in college. We just thought, why rush him back when there's stuff to explore there? I think it's interesting for Rory to have to find her own way at Yale without Logan, and also try to maintain this relationship and to see how much she really loves this guy, how deep the feelings run. But I promise you, Logan will be a major part of her life this year, and they will find ways to be together.

Ausiello: Were you OK with Matt Czuchry doing an episode of Veronica Mars?
Rosenthal: I just wanted to make sure he was not playing a character similar to who he's playing on Gilmore Girls. I think Matt's a terrific actor. He has great range and an ability to play all kinds of characters. I support Matt and would love him to do all kinds of work outside the show. I just didn't want it to feel like, ?Logan's guest-starring on Veronica Mars.?

Ausiello: When and how will Marty reappear in Rory's life?
Rosenthal: He makes kind of a surprising appearance when she's least expecting it. And whether intentionally or unintentionally, he definitely stirs up some trouble in her personal life in a big way. He really causes her a lot of problems. Marty's grown up a little. He's developed a thicker skin; he's a little tougher. He's not such a boy anymore. His actions will definitely cause trouble in Rory's life.

Ausiello: Now for the most frequently asked question from fans: Will we ever see Mr. Kim?Rosenthal: Nope. Mr. Kim is a mystery. Perhaps one day that mystery will be answered, but there are no plans now. I think Mr. Kim is like Norm's wife, Vera. Better to just imagine him.

We'll see lots more witty banter between mom and daughter, which, let's face it, is what makes this show so good. But of course, everyone wants to know if there's hope for Luke and Lorelai, right? All I can say is that although Gilmore boss David Rosenthal tells me Luke and Lorelai "have a very deep bond, and we certainly respect that relationship," he acknowledges that love isn't always enough. Moreover, um, Christopher is not gone. Still, I think fans will be pleasantly surprised at how good this show remains, even without original show runner Amy Sherman-Palladino. Picking up on the day after last season's finale, Lorelai wakes up in bed with Christopher. Confused and mortified, she makes a hasty exit, ignoring Christopher's pleas that she stay. Rory receives a toy rocket ship as a parting gift from Logan and is baffled as to its meaning. She decides she should join him in London for the summer, only to learn he has bought her a ticket for a visit at Christmas. Kirk and Taylor cause a bizarre accident that damages Luke's diner. The episode looked, sounded and felt like a typical hour of Gilmore Girls. Actually, I would rank it up there with some of the show's most entertaining episodes. The pacing and tone were what we have come to expect — and love — and, despite all the sturm und drang of the Luke/Lorelai/Christopher triangle, it was funny. Very funny. At times, even hysterical. And there was also a fair share of romance courtesy of Rory, Logan and a two-foot-tall rocket ship. Any scene that ends with Babette explaining to Lorelai how she'd like her "intimates" dried is a winner in my book. Paris's SAT-tutoring business exceeded all of my comedic expectations. When a mother of one of the control freak's potential pupils asks why they both have to take a preliminary aptitude test, Paris barks, "Basically, I need to know how much of this is her fault and how much of it is yours." The funniest Paris line is also the one most likely to fly right past you, so pay really close attention. Taylor's decision to install a red-light camera to catch lawbreakers leads to all sorts of frivolity, not to mention one of the funniest Kirk sight gags ever. Although some of you will likely groan at the mere thought of Lorelai and Rory playing a sport, the Girls' racquetball game/exercise in distraction works precisely because it is so preposterous. And if you had any doubt whether Rosenthal could nail AS-P's signature prose, consider this line, in which Rory tells Lorelai that there was nothing good about her tearful good-bye to Logan: "It's a very poorly-named ritual," she laments. "It was a bad-bye, very bad-bye." Speaking of Rory and her beau, the aforementioned rocket was a gift from London-bound Logan and is, initially, a source of great angst for his favorite Girl. I don't want to reveal why, but I will say the symbolic gesture ultimately brings them closer together than ever. (Hint: It all goes back to the episode title, "The Long Morrow.") Ironically, the weakest part of the episode was something boss man Rosenthal likely had little control over: Lauren Graham's emotionally guarded performance. Don't get me wrong, LG was at her gloriously pithy best. [...] But much of the episode called for Lorelai to be distraught over what she had done to Luke (i.e. bedding Christopher), and, unfortunately, LG rarely gives you a sense of that anguish. Lorelai behaves as if she had just broken up with some poor schlub she dated for a few weeks — a Max, for crying out loud — rather than the love of her life. The final, heartbreaking scene should have torn Lorelai's insides up but instead elicits little more than a frown. The way it plays, she's not devastated, she pities Luke. Huh? Perhaps a line change in the episode may shed some light on the show's direction this season – and, possibly, the increased creative role LG has in this post-Palladino era. In a telephone conversation with Christopher, Lorelai — according to Rosenthal's original script — told her ex this "will never happen again." This, of course, being the dirty deed. Q: Is Gilmore Girls being renewed for another season?

A: Not yet. And I honestly think it's too soon to tell. As you may have seen in Scott Patterson's Q&A in the message boards, he believes it's up to the three or, rather, the two of them. It is Alexis and Lauren's call, and I don't think they'll know whether they want the show to continue until they see what the new producers do with it. Here's what Alexis told me: "I don't know, I mean, I'm kind of curious to see what it's like this season, because I know how I feel about the way it's been in the past. But it's going to be totally different, so we'll see how we feel after this year."

Q: I'm reading between the lines on recent Gilmore reports, and I'm guessing that Lorelai and Luke aren't the best of friends in real life. I'm okay with that. But if you tell me Rory and Logan don't get along, I'll freak out and die.

A: No reason for such silliness, my friend. All is well in Gilmore land, and Alexis has this to say of her onscreen boyfriend Matt Czuchry (and I swear she means it!): "It's really fun working with him, I mean it definitely is, because he's always very engaged, he's always in character, and it kinda motivates me. Because, like, I'm on the show every day, and when he comes in, he brings this fresh new energy and its kinda nice to work with him. COMMITTED TO HIS 'GIRLS.' East Tennessee's Matt Czuchry will be back this fall on the CW network's "Gilmore Girls," even though his character is being shipped off to Europe. "I'm doing 15 (episodes) out of 22 this season," he told me recently. Czuchry, whose family still lives in Johnson City, plays Logan, the blue-blood beau of Rory (Alexis Bledel). At the end of last season, Logan took a job in England, resulting in a tearful split between him and Rory. Not all comes together quickly for the estranged couple: Czuchry will only appear in brief scenes for the first two episodes. "I'm just seen talking on the phone," he says. But Czuchry suspects that Logan, whom he has played for three seasons, will be seen much more after that.

Logan and Logan! Okay, it's time to fess up on which CW heartthrob was paid $183 to boogie atop the gigantic, lighted logo of his new network. And mind you, this all happened long after every other cast had gone home--which goes to show the newfound excitement surrounding this show. It was none other than Matt Czuchry, aka Gilmore Girls Logan, who didn't shy away from the dare the female members of the Gilmore writing staff challenged him with. (Although, he didn't want to draw too much attention to himself, so he begged his audience not to holler and scream too loudly). And though getting up there was tricky, he persevered until he made it and showcased his happy-go-lucky, seriously undiva-like attitude (don't worry about him leaving the show anytime soon--he had the Gilmore writers giggling like schoolgirls and quietly cheering him on), which has made him my favorite person of the week so far...well, along with that other Logan.

I nearly died and went to CW heaven when I found myself in a Logan sandwich on the CW red carpet, as Czuchry introduced himself to Veronica Mars' Logan (Jason Dohring). Someone's Read the First Gilmore Girls Script!

"Don't ask me how I got it. Or from whom. But I got it. By "it," I'm referring to the most sought-after 77 pages in Hollywood right now — the script for the season premiere of Gilmore Girls, penned by David S. Rosenthal.

OK, so maybe "the most sought-after" is a slight exaggeration, but it's definitely been the most sought after by me. You see, this script contains answers to some of the new season's biggest questions. Among them: Can Rosenthal mimic Team Palladino's signature, rapid-fire rhythms? How will last May's controversial finale affect Luke and Lorelai? Does the boss favor some supporting characters over others? And, most importantly, is the thing any good?

Let's start with that last question first. I'm happy and greatly relieved — and, if I'm being completely honest, a smidge shocked — to report that yes, it's good. In fact, it's better than good — it's great. Obviously, I can't get too specific. As it is, Warner Bros. and CW have probably already hired a bounty hunter to track down the source of the script leak. But here are some things I learned about Mr. Rosenthal after reading his debut as show-runner, with a few spoilers mixed in for fun.

He has Palladino blood in him.
Translation: He's got Amy and Dan's style down pat. When I finished the script, I almost had to look back at the byline to make sure the last name was Rosenthal and not Palladino. Honestly, I could not tell the difference. Besides nailing the banter, several of his one-liners were classic, laugh-out-loud Palladino. On the downside, like his predecessors, he overestimates viewers' appetite for one Taylor Doose.

He's a fan of Luke and Lorelai.
Now I'm not going to lie to you: The episode is going to be a tough one for Luke and Lorelai fans to watch. Really tough. Based on how the season ended — and the fact that Rosenthal confirmed to me last week that Lorelai and Christopher did indeed have sex — that much was a given. But I think he handled the fallout from Christophergate with unbelievable grace and dignity — particularly as it pertains to Luke and Lorelai as a couple. Let me put it this way: The episode left no doubt in my mind that Lorelai and Luke are meant for each other.

He'll always have Paris.
Liza Weil told me herself at the CW party last week that Rosenthal had given her her longest scene ever in the premiere — and she wasn't exaggerating. It's six pages! But it's not the length that stood out, it's the way Rosenthal managed to capture Paris' trademark vim, vigor and bite. Plus, I can't think of a more perfect business venture for Rory's sometime roommate than an SAT-prep course. The possibilities for clashes with stupidity are endless!

He's a hopeless romantic.
And Logan and Rory fans will be swooning as a result. Sure, the episode finds them on opposite continents, but Rosenthal has found a way to bring them closer together than I think they've ever been. All I'll say is his method is sweet, utterly romantic, and it ties in with the episode title "The Long Morrow." And the end result should put Matt Czuchry fans' mind at ease (at least for the short term).

Lorelai makes a passing reference to the title of one of the best Gilmore Girls episodes ever. I was left with the impression that there will be a significant time lapse between Episodes 1 and 2.

Emily, Richard, Lane, April and Anna are MIA, but the rest of the supporting cast is pretty much accounted for. Having said all this, there's no guarantee our Girls won't go to hell in a handbasket beginning with the second episode.

But let's celebrate one win at a time. We got over the first hurdle. Rosenthal is clearly a talented guy who gets our little show.

That's a good start.

SPOILERS: Executive producer of hit CW show gives up big secret for next season.

LOS ANGELES--Stars Hollow is about to get a little more crowded.

CW's Gilmore Girls. Gilmore Girls executive producer David Rosenthal, while speaking to TV.com at the TV Critic's Press Association summer tour, said that in the coming season fans can expect the arrival of a new Gilmore person.

"At some point [this season], there will be a baby on Gilmore Girls," Rosenthal told TV.com.

In addition to a visit from the stork, he said Gilmore fans can expect more screen time for Rory's dad. Rory will also fill the vacuum left by Logan's move to London by dating some new guys.

Earlier in the day, Rosenthal and Gilmore stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel spoke Monday at the convention, being held at the Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena.

Rosenthal discussed how the departure of show creator Amy Sherman-Paladino had affected him.

"[Amy] made it very easy for me. She created this wonderful, amazing show ... and wished me all the luck in the world," he said. "She's left us with a very full plate, [but] I think it's going to make for a great season."

When asked how she felt about fans' negative reaction to the Luke-Lorelai romance, Graham defended the story arc.

"It wasn't my favorite stuff to play ... but I thought it was a believable conflict," Graham said. "If everything had gone the way fans wanted it to go, the show would be over."

Both actresses have budding film careers, Graham in the upcoming Evan Almighty and Bledel in Sin City and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Graham spoke of the rumor that she and costar Bledel were not keen on doing another season of the show after the upcoming seventh.

"I read the first script. I love it. So a lot of things could happen," the actress said. "The fact is, our legal contracts our up, so you begin to imagine, 'Well, what if?' in a different way than before."

The actresses were philosophical when asked about their being passed up for Emmy nominations again. This year's rule changes in Emmy voting were supposed to give shows like Gilmore a better chance.

"I didn't know what was happening with that," Bledel said. "I just think that our show has never been big with the Emmys."

"Yeah, I read a lot of Architectural Digest," Graham quipped to laughter. "I try to stay out of what the chatter is in all show business."

"If there are still people of the opinion that we should be included, that's really nice," Bledel added.

Rosenthal said he is not taking the same approach that he took in the last season of the show.

Tense moments at 'Gilmore Girls'

When it comes to tension and gritted teeth at this summer press tour, you could hardly do better than the panel discussion of "The Gilmore Girls," which is returning this fall on the CW.

The series' creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, left the series under less than perfect circumstances, handing the series over to executive producer David S. Rosenthal. He appeared Monday along with stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel.

Graham at times appeared awkward as she attempted diplomatic replies to questions about some of her character's out-of-character actions during the last season. (Fans had complained that Graham's normally courageous Lorelai had behaved atypically when she let her boyfriend Luke mistreat her.) She also seemed uncomfortable when asked about her earlier statements about wanting to leave the series.

But the high — or rather low — point came when one scribe asked Rosenthal about his reported "obsession" with supermodel Heidi Klum. A New York Observer piece in 2001 reported that Rosenthal the previous year had left his wife, become estranged from his colleagues and written a play that indicated his fixation on Klum. The reporter asked Rosenthal if he was really the appropriate person to run the lighthearted, family-oriented "Gilmore Girls."

"My personal life is not an issue here," Rosenthal replied with a shaken voice. "I'm here to talk about 'The Gilmore Girls.' "

When the reporter pressed, Graham snapped, "That has nothing to do with anything. Next."

Los Angeles -- All the drama won't be confined to the fictional town of Stars Hollow this fall on "Gilmore Girls." A new network, new executive producer and some new writers have shaken things up behind the scenes.

Add to that the fact that Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, who play the close-knit single mother and her daughter, are entering the final year of their contracts. Neither did much Monday to put to rest rumors about the show's fate after its seventh season, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 26.

"Your legal contracts are up, and you begin to imagine what if," Graham told the Television Critics Association's summer meeting. "I don't want to be in a situation where I feel sorry for me. I've seen that happen to actors and shows where the thing is done, let it be over. I don't know that we're in that situation."

Bledel added, "I really don't know what this year is going to be like. I'm going to see what it's like, then decide how I feel. We'll see."

Graham wasn't thrilled with last season's story line that had her Lorelai character giving fiance Luke a now-or-never ultimatum after he asked for patience in dealing with his newly discovered 12-year-old daughter. Luke let Lorelai walk out of his life.

"It wasn't my favorite stuff to play, to be dictated to by Luke, but again, it was a believable conflict and a believable obstacle between them, and that's why the end made perfect sense," Graham said. "If everything had gone the way the fans had wanted it to go, the show would have been over."

And Graham "wasn't a fan" of the painful separation between Lorelai and her screen daughter, Rory.

Those scripts were written by show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband and co-executive producer, Daniel Palladino, who both left the comedy-drama last season after failing to reach agreement on a new contract with Warner Bros. Television.

Graham made it clear, however, that she is "a huge fan of Amy and Dan's."

"I loved that writing, but I also think there's room for it to grow," she said.

The Palladinos, who handled the majority of the scripts, said they wanted to add more writers to ease their burden.

Dave Rosenthal, a writer and producer on the show, is in charge now, and he oversees an eight-person writing staff. He said he's not treating this season like it will be the show's last.

"The goal is to do 22 good episodes of Gilmore Girls' and let the rest take its course," he said.

Sherman-Palladino has said she knows how the show should end. When the time comes, Rosenthal said he'll call her.

"I would definitely like to talk to Amy about that," he said.

Scott Patterson, who plays Luke on The CW's "Gilmore Girls," isn't about to question the writers of the series for deciding to send his fiance, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), into the bed of the father of her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) in last season's final scene.

But he realizes it could be a deal breaker for the chances of Lorelai and Luke ever getting married, as many fans wish.

"That's going to be a tough one to come back from," said Patterson at a party here.

What would happen in the real world?

"In the real world, those things happen for a reason and people rebound from them," said Patterson. "It is really a precarious position to be in. I think he'll have to do some soul searching to work his way out of this one. It is not checkmate, but it may be check."

In contrast to the cuddly “Veronica Mars” session, the “Gilmore Girls” session had a feel of a cage match.

In one corner: New “Gilmore Girls” showrunner David Rosenthal, who was meeting the press for the first time

In the other: Members of the press who have written about and raved about and ranted about “Gilmore Girls” for a six seasons, many of whom were unhappy with where the sixth season ended up, and wondered how this new guy would be able to take over a show with such a specific tone and such specific voices.

It was a tough crowd. At least Rosenthal was flanked by the show’s two stars, Alexis Bledel, who didn’t talk much, and Lauren Graham, who talked a lot.

She specifically said that if the press reported her as saying negative things about Amy Sherman-Palladino or Daniel Palladino, the show’s former head honchos, she would be upset. But, having said that, she said she already had the first script of the new year, which appeared to be unusual by this point in the production process.

She also indicated that the process was more collaborative than it had been under the Palladinos. She added that though where she understood where Lorelai ended up and how she got there, she’d been unhappy with the way her character was written last season, and had expressed her concerns.

“It wasn’t my favorite stuff to play, to kind of be dictated to by Luke, but again it was a believable conflict and a believable obstacles between them. That’s why the ending [of the season] made perfect sense because she tried to kind of be in a place that wasn't natural to her, that wasn't who she is. And so ultimately she couldn't take it anymore,” she said.

“But I think you had to have that build-up to get to where we got. I mean, if everything had gone the way the fans wanted it to go in terms of that relationship, the show would be over, or I would just be calling Rory, like, ‘What are you doing tonight?’ … to me this is a relationship with a lot of built-in problems between two people who are very different, who are trying to find a common language, and so it made sense to me.”

Regarding whether she’d leave the show when her contract is up at the end of Season 7, Graham said she hasn’t made up her mind.

“I have felt that way but I haven’t been in this particular collaboration before and I think we’re all really excited to see where the show can go. I read the first script and I love it,” she said.

“I am a huge fan of Amy and Dan. I loved that writing. I had some of the best, most interesting, fun, great scenes ever. But I also think there is room for it to grow and, you know, there's all these people now where we had a more specific, smaller group working on it,” Graham said. “Now we have these people who I sat down with the other day who are so enthusiastic, who come in as fans, who come in as people who have kind of fresh voices to lend to it, and I think it's going to grow.”

Bledel said she’s also undecided about returning. “I really don't know what this year is going to be like,” she said. “I think it's going to be really different, and I'm just going to see what it's like and then decide how I feel.”

As far as capturing the tone of the show, Rosenthal said that he’s hired new writers and there are now a total of eight writers on staff, all of whom come to the show as fans of the Gilmores.

Rosenthal said he’s not treating this as the end of “Gilmore Girls,” but that if it emerged that this year was the show’s last, he’d try to find out from Amy Sherman-Palladino what she’d envisioned for the show’s last scene. She’s long said she has the last scene of the show mapped out in her mind, down to the show’s last two spoken words.

The session did turn extraordinarily frosty when one writer asked Rosenthal about some personal troubles he had that involved a fascination with Heidi Klum. He turned red in the face, and it felt like the temperature in the room instantly dropped 30 degrees.

“My personal life is not an issue here,” Rosenthal said. “It's not worth getting into. I'm just here to talk about the show.”

“How does it make you professionally the right person for this show?” the questioner persisted.

“It has nothing to do with anything. Next,” Graham snapped.

Later, Graham made a surprising admission. She doesn’t much like working with the dog who plays Paul Anka. But he will be back in the new season.

Nothing against that particular dog, she said, but “I just am not a fan of dog comedy,” she said.

After the session, Rosenthal spoke with several reporters. Part of the transcript for that session is here, the other part is on the jump of this item.

What do you feel like your take is on the show is, that might be different than what went on in the past? What do you bring?

“I’ve brought in a whole new team of writers. We have one wonderful returning writer from last year, but everybody else is new [Rina Mimoun from ‘Everwood’ is one of the new writers]. And as Lauren said, they come in as real true fans of the show.

“I think that kind of passion and perspective is great for a show, especially for people who find themselves inside the show, a show that they’re huge fans of, a show that they’re invested in. So I feel like that perspective is exciting, it’s exciting for me to hear from them, for them to share their thoughts and ideas and opinions. That’s something I feel has really impacted us creatively in a very positive way.”

“Gilmore Girls” has one of the most passionate, vocal fan bases out there. Is it the kind of thing where you just have to make the choices that you make and you can’t worry about people’s reactions?

“I think it’s wonderful, believe me, the reason the show is still on the air and does so well and I think it may have had its highest ratings ever last year because of that passionate fan base, so I completely respect and love that they’re out there. But yeah, ultimately, we spend all day every day talking about this show and talking about the characters and working very hard, in a very focused manner on it. And ultimately we have to do what we feel is in the best interest of the show, both short term and long term, in terms of where the characters are going.

“And also, we have the benefit of seeing arcs. We have the benefit of seeing the future and knowing where we want to take them. So while something may be disturbing in the short run, or upsetting or confusing to a fan, we as the writers recognize that, yes, that’s upsetting but ultimately that’s the journey that this character has to go on, they’re required to do this or that. It can be hard to go through different experiences that can be hard on them or hard on the fans, but ultimately we’re interested in personal growth. Obviously if characters never went through difficult times or never suffered, or had to face obstacles it would be hard for them to grow.

“One of the beauties of the show and one of the reasons it continues to attract such a loyal fan base is that the characters are able to grow and change and develop, like Alexis said. I mean, she’s really grown and changed over the years as has Scott [Patterson, who plays Luke]. And so that’s something that I feel is a huge identity of the show.”

How does it feel to be on a different network? Is there a different energy?

“I gotta say, we’re on the same night, the same time, I know in Los Angeles we’re on the same channel. I would imagine we’re on the same channel across the country. For us the work is exactly the same and the effort is exactly the same and the show is exactly the same. So it’s really just a question of how it’s presented and how it’s marketed and how it’s broadcast and that’s not something that we really deal with. And I’m sure that [the CW folks] will do great.”

Is the character the Paul Anka, the real Paul Anka, is he going to be back on the show?

“There are no plans for him to come back, but he was terrific on the show, so it wouldn’t surprise me. I mean it was a dream sequence. But the dog will definitely be back, I promise.”

Will the rift between Lorelai and Luke be similar to the rift between Lorelai and Rory last year? The fans hated how that played out. Are you going to play this out differently?

“Yeah, we never want to what’s been done in the past, Luke and Lorelai, their relationship is unique, it’s not a mother-daughter relationship, it’s boyfriend-girlfriend or fiancés. So we’re going to explore that, we’re going to let the characters take us where they will. It’s not going to be like the Lorelai-Rory [situation]. I’m not saying it’s always going to be pleasant or pretty, I mean, they’re two adults and they’re going to have to deal with what’s happening.”

Was there any nail-biting at all or did you always know you would be on the new network?

“No, I don’t think there was ever any question. It always seemed a no-brainer to bring ‘Gilmore Girls’ along.”

Paris starts a small business to help student prep for the SATs. She meets a student named Kaitlin and her mother. After being brutally honest about what she thinks of Kaitlin, she agrees to help her study for the SATs. She then has the mother and the daughter take an aptitude test to know what potential Kaitlin has and what comes from genetics. At the diner, Luke is particularly irritated especially when a customer tries to leave without paying his bill. When Taylor's Thunderbird is stranded in front of the diner, Taylor wants it to stay there until the insurance company takes a look at it. Luke must decide if he wants it towed or not. Milo Ventimiglia did dish about a possible return to Gilmore Girls, saying it's "never going to happen" — especially now that Team Palladino have hit the road. "I felt [Jess' story] was done a long time ago, but Dan and Amy kept saying, 'We got some cool things, and we're really hoping you'll be a part of it.' Are Luke and Lorelai really over?

I'm going to guess no, although I wouldn't bet on them getting hitched anytime soon next season. The forecast is better for Logan and Rory, though. At least, it is according to Liza Weil, who plays Paris. When I talked to her a couple of weeks ago, she told me the Logan-Rory relationship was genius, and that even though it may not be the healthiest relationship, this could really be Rory's guy, the one she ends up with. Truth is, it's really all up in the air right now. With the Sherman-Palladinos gone, the fate of the Gilmores is in the hands of their new show runner, David Rosenthal. I just hope his sensibility is similar to Amy S.-P.'s. Gilmore just won't going to be the same without dinner-table discussions debating the pros and cons of Ashlee Simpson's new hair color, not to mention all her flaws, without ever once actually mentioning the name "Ashlee Simpson." Now, that is just pure genius.
